What This PEMDAS Calculator Does

Enter any arithmetic expression and this tool evaluates it while showing the order-of-operations steps — parentheses, then exponents, then multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction — so you can see exactly why the result comes out the way it does.

How It Works

PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right). Multiplication and division are equal priority and evaluated left to right in the order they appear; the same is true for addition and subtraction.

A Common Mistake

A frequent error is treating multiplication as always coming before division, or addition always before subtraction. In reality, once you reach that tier, you evaluate strictly left to right: 10 − 4 + 2 = 8, not 4 (which would be wrong, since subtraction comes first left to right).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PEMDAS stand for?

Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction — the standard order for evaluating a mathematical expression.

Is PEMDAS the same as BODMAS?

Yes — BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction) is the same rule taught under a different name, mainly in the UK and other countries. Both describe the identical order of operations.

Do multiplication and division happen in a fixed order?

No — multiplication and division share the same priority level and are evaluated left to right as they appear in the expression, not multiplication always first. The same applies to addition and subtraction.
