Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Results are simplified.
Enter two fractions (or whole numbers, entered with a denominator of 1) and choose an operation — add, subtract, multiply, or divide. The calculator returns the exact result, automatically simplified to lowest terms, along with the equivalent decimal value.
Add/Subtract: fractions are converted to a common denominator first, then the numerators are added or subtracted.
Multiply: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d).
Divide: multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flipped version) of the second: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c).
Every result is simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD), so you always get the fraction in lowest terms.
Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For example, 8/12 has a GCD of 4, so it simplifies to 2/3.
A fraction represents parts of a whole divided into a specific number of pieces. You can only directly combine parts if they're divided into the same-sized pieces, which is what a common denominator ensures.
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flip the numerator and denominator). For example, 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2.
