What This Cumulative GPA Calculator Does

Instead of re-entering every course you've ever taken, enter each semester's GPA along with the number of credit hours attempted that semester. The calculator weights every semester by its credit load and combines them into one accurate cumulative GPA — the same figure that appears on an official transcript.

How It Works

Cumulative GPA = Total Grade Points Across All Semesters ÷ Total Credit Hours Across All Semesters

Each semester's grade points are estimated as that semester's GPA multiplied by its credit hours. Simply averaging semester GPAs together (without weighting for credits) gives an inaccurate result if you took a different course load each term — a 12-credit semester should count for more than a 3-credit summer term.

Why Credit-Weighting Matters

Imagine a 4.0 GPA in one 3-credit summer course averaged with a 3.0 GPA across a 15-credit fall semester. A simple average gives 3.5, but the credit-weighted cumulative GPA is much closer to 3.0, since the fall semester represents five times more coursework.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cumulative GPA just the average of my semester GPAs?

No — a simple average treats every semester equally regardless of credit load, which overstates the impact of light semesters. Cumulative GPA weights each semester by the number of credits attempted, matching how registrars calculate the transcript GPA.

Do repeated or withdrawn courses affect cumulative GPA?

Policies vary by school. Some schools use grade replacement (only the retake counts), while others average both attempts into the cumulative GPA. Check your institution's academic policy for repeated courses — this calculator assumes you're entering the credits and GPA your school actually counts.

Why does my cumulative GPA change less than my semester GPA?

As total credit hours accumulate, each new semester makes up a smaller share of the overall total, so the cumulative GPA moves more slowly than any single semester's grades. This is normal and expected as you progress through a degree.
